Traveller Notes: Colombo

She's small but she's mighty!

There is magic in her calming greenery, balmy breeze and golden beaches. Visit Sri Lanka when you need to show yourself some TLC and she'll kiss your worries goodbye.

I visited last year and I already see myself recommending her to anyone flirting with the idea of a quick trip. Which is why, I would like to introduce my Traveller Notes section talking about the most-probable starting point of your travels in Sri Lanka.

Let me introduce you to Colombo.

The city can be visually perceived in two prominent colours – green and white. The green from the neat landscaping, pruned trees and vegetation dotting every curve of the streets and the white from the series of buildings standing next to one another as the most agreeable neighbours. The people are warm, the food is not unknown (India-like) and there is harmony in the hustle and bustle on the streets.

STAY

Well, R and I stayed with an Australian couple at an Airbnb in Colombo. The reason we prefer Airbnbs is the opportunity they bring for exchanging notes with locals. In case you are not a fan of that idea, here are some more suggestions that came in from friends and ex-colleagues who had made trips to Colombo earlier. I am told Galle Face Hotel, Ozo Colombo and Paradise Road Tintagel Colombo are great options to consider if you are looking at hotels.

EAT

I wanted to stuff my face with all the authentic Sri Lankan food I could find. Green Cabin was an inexpensive option, a few kilometers away from Thimbirigasyaya, where our BnB was located. Moon River Chinese restaurant, also in the area, was a great stop for lip-smacking food. If you are in for some indulgence, hit Gallery Cafe. I am told this is one of the top five restaurants in the world!

TRY

The city is dotted with Buddhist temples. Roam around soaking in the art, culture and way of life of Colombo through these temples and museums.

The Gangaramya Temple, a prominent, but unassuming structure houses a museum that has much to offer in terms of Thai, Sri Lankan and Chinese culture. Just across the road from here is a lake temple, worth a peep. If your evenings are free, head to Galle Face - a sea-facing promenade - to let lose the child in you as you fly the fanciest kites that are sold at street shops.

Caption: Talk about creativity and the Galle Face kite-makers lead the way. From replication of country flags to representation of winged wonders (eagles and butterflies), you will find kites in all shapes, sizes and forms at Galle Face.

SHOP

Laksala and Lakpahana are your destinations to pick up the colourful Sri Lankan masks and delicate stone jewellery. If you are decorating a new house or are in a mood to offer your home a quick makeover, drop by at Paradise Road to pick up the finest home ware and spa essentials.

TRANSIT

Autos (tuktuks) are easily available and charge you as per meter. Malkey Rental services are very reliable for personal cab services.

WALLET

The average cost per day in Colombo will range from US$30 to US$35. This includes costs of food, inter-city transport and museum fee.
